What started as trying to control, shame, and force our son to get back on track turned into respecting him as a person and setting boundaries. David Hampton, Certified Professional Recovery Coach, shares his personal story with addiction and nearly 20-year long recovery journey. By age 15, I was committed to the role of a drug user – and I couldn’t have been happier about it. For me, drugs and alcohol offered an escape from the constant discomfort I experienced as a child, a sense of belonging and an identity that was exciting, risky and offered the illusion of control. Matthew Peyser passed away from substance use disorder in July 2017. I use “is” =https://ecosoberhouse.com/ and not “was” because Eric is still with us — just in a different manner. He’s with us when we go out to dinner and get a glimpse of the chefs in the kitchen, and we hear him giving directions when we cook at home. We’ll never forget the sound of his voice, laugh, or mannerisms.

My desire to get high was a priority and all other relationships suffered. Any healthy relationships I may have had soon disappeared, as my values changed to support my substance use habits. Our son Eric died on April 8, 2015, from a heroin overdose cut with fentanyl. Eric struggled with substance use for 10 years and was clean for 2 years and 4 months when he relapsed after a doctor prescribed him Xanax for anxiety. After his death, I wrote our story for therapy, and that same story was published as a book titled A Family’s Story of Addiction, Death, and Recovery.
